This book practices the student in three letter words containing the short vowel sound of the letter "a." These are not simply lists of words - each book tells a story in complete sentences or phrases but does not progress beyond the short "a" parameters. The first page lists all of the words used in this book and the student should practice reading each of these words before beginning to read the book. If he or she can recognize all of the letters of the alphabet and knows the sounds of the consonants, he is set up to begin reading words with vowel sounds, which are typically the most difficult sounds for the emerging reader to master. By the end of Book One, the student will feel comfortable and competent reading any words containing the "at" combination and will be well on his way to learning to read.

  • I have tried all of these readers with many emergent readers with Success and Great Success, but no less than that. They love the funny and colorful pictures which help to lead them to read the text. They really enjoy the experience and want to show it to everyone! Heart laughter accompanies exploration of the books. I think that even the non-English speakers catch on faster because of these pictures. They feel such a sense of accomplishment when they finish each book, but are not exhausted by the effort. Thank you for letting me field test them - afte two years, I am still finding ways to use these books. --Montessori Teacher, Pre-school Level

These phonics readers have been piloted in pre-school with wonderful results. The kids loved the illustrations and the stories and were excited at being able to read the book the first time they picked it up. Based on the principle of teaching one sound at a time, the students learn to read with no stumbling and no losses. --Editor
