By Richer Resources Editorial Team

Writing about Homer’s Odyssey asks students to do more than remember what happened. A strong literary essay should make a clear argument, use specific evidence from the poem, explain how that evidence supports the argument, and present the ideas in a logical and readable form.

What the Rubric Measures
This rubric evaluates five areas of student writing:

Argument and Thesis
Does the essay make a clear, specific, and defensible claim in response to the assignment?

Evidence from the Poem
Does the student use relevant events, details, and quotations or references from The Odyssey to support the argument?

Analysis and Explanation
Does the essay explain why the evidence matters rather than simply retelling the story?

Organization and Development
Are ideas arranged logically, with focused paragraphs and clear connections between the thesis, evidence, and analysis?

Clarity and Writing Quality
Is the writing understandable, appropriately formal, and reasonably free of errors that interfere with meaning?

Using the Rubric
Teachers can use the rubric for full literary essays, timed writing, comparative essays, or longer analytical responses. It can also be shared with students before they begin writing so that expectations are clear from the start.

The printable version includes a scoring grid, space for comments, and a short student self-check that can be completed before an essay is submitted.
